My JKU, which is the coming successor of KUSSS
STEOP (Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase) is the Introductory and Orientation Phase of your degree program.
You must complete the required STEOP courses and exams in your first semester (or year) before taking the most advanced courses.
Failing a STEOP exam three times may mean you cannot continue the same program at Austrian public universities.
Focus on STEOP early and seek help if needed—it's a key step in your academic journey at JKU.
You must register for exams on KUSSS.
If you can’t attend, unregister in time or email the exam team.
You have five chances per course. The 3rd try can be commission-based (reviewed by multiple instructors), and the 4th/5th tries are always commission-based.
Failing all 5 attempts = you cannot finish the degree.
If you're a first-year bachelor's or diploma student, you must complete at least 16 ECTS within your first 4 semesters. If not, you may lose your spot in the program.
Deadlines:
March 31 (for winter semester progress)
October 31 (for summer semester progress)
In addition to compulsory classes, you can take “Free LVAs”:
Language courses (e.g. Advanced English for Science, Technology, and Law – Level B2)
Courses from other JKU departments or universities
Popular options: Scientific Writing and Layout using LaTeX
Check your curriculum to see how many ECTS you can earn from free electives.
MyJKU is the successor to KUSSS and offers most of its core features—including news, calendar, courses, exams, grades, and tuition fee payment—within a more modern design and improved user interface. The migration of services from KUSSS to MY JKU is ongoing, but the platform is already fully functional for daily use, and MY JKU is now released as a 2nd platform serving the same purpose as KUSSS, and it will fully replace it in the next few semesters.
