Course Registration at JKU (and Most Austrian Universities)
Before each semester begins, you’ll need to register for the courses you plan to take. At JKU, this is done online through KUSSS. The registration period typically opens a few weeks before classes begin, allowing you time to plan your schedule, review prerequisites, and secure a spot in your preferred courses.
Registration Periods
Registration opens mid‑September for the winter semester and mid‑February for the summer semester
Example: For Winter Semester 2025/26, course registration is scheduled from September 8 to 26, 2025, depending on your faculty
Preliminary courses and dates appear in KUSSS early (e.g., August 4, 2025)
Course Types at JKU
Core Course Formats:
Lectures (VO/VL)
Provide theoretical overviews of subjects
Teacher-centered format with no mandatory attendance
Typically assessed through a final exam (sometimes with optional mini-tests)
Exercises (UE) & Practical Courses (PR)
Complement the lecture material with hands-on practice
Assessment methods vary (regular assignments, presentations, or lab reports)
Attendance requirements set by the instructor
Always check KUSSS for specific course details
Seminars (SE)
Develop research and presentation skills
Typically require:
Seminar paper
Final presentation
Regular attendance
Combined Courses (KV)
A hybrid of lectures and exercises
Attendance and grading are determined by the instructor
Important Notes
Some courses require prerequisites or manual approval from the instructor.
For lab courses or seminars, early registration is highly recommended.
You can deregister from most courses within the first few weeks.
How Allocation Works
KUSSS sorts registrations within each course by time of last click/save—this timestamp determines priority if spots are limited .
If a course group is full, KUSSS automatically checks your next choice in your ranking and your schedule for overlaps.
Allocation happens after the registration deadline. Your final placement status appears shortly after (e.g., by Oct 2, 2025, for WS25/26).
Some courses allow direct allocation—if spots are available when you register, you get in immediately.
A small number of courses use priority number allocation, meaning your registration time doesn’t matter; instead, part-time and waiting bonus points are factored in.
Regarding the priority allocation, only the time of your last save counts toward priority.
What If You're Waitlisted or Missed Registration?
Some classes have separate registration windows outside the main period. Check “KUSSS News” and the class page for details.
In the first class session, you can attend and politely request the instructor to add you manually—this approach sometimes works if there is space.
Registration Tips for Students
Plan ahead: Select your preferred courses before the registration window opens and rank them wisely to avoid overlaps or exceeding your ECTS limit.
Save your changes; only the time of your last save counts toward priority.
Check prerequisites and credit limits: If you register for more than the maximum ECTS, the system may deny the course even if there are open spots.

Important Deadlines:
Deregistration: Possible until the first meeting for most courses
After the deadline:
Lectures: for most, simply don't take the exam (no penalty) but in some you might not be able to take the next retry if you’re absent with no excuse.
Exercises/Practicals: Contact the instructor about deregistration
If not possible, you may receive a negative grade (multiple attempts allowed)
Course’s First Session Importance:
Critical for understanding course organization
Mandatory for attendance-required courses (may lose spot if absent)
Waiting list students may take unclaimed spots
