1. Hofer (Aldi)
A top choice for budget-conscious students. Hofer offers low prices, a limited but essential range of items, and good quality, especially for their own-brand products. Weekly offers often include kitchen tools, clothing, and electronics.
2. Billa
A mid-range supermarket known for its variety and quality. Billa offers both regular and organic products. Prices are higher than in discount stores.
3. Spar / Interspar / Eurospar
Spar stores vary in size, from small convenience shops to large Interspar hypermarkets. They offer a wide selection of branded goods, fresh produce, and international products, but are typically more expensive
Spar is often open on Sundays at selected locations (e.g., spar at the main train station)
Tip: Interspar also sells electronics, homeware, and clothing.
4. Penny
Another discount supermarket, Penny is comparable to Hofer in terms of prices but offers a slightly wider selection of international products. It’s a good option for affordable groceries and often has weekly promotions.
In Austria, Huber’s Halal Poultry (with the product code AT 40840 on the back of the packaging) offers certified products, such as chicken/turkey fillets, drumsticks, and wings, which are available in many chain supermarkets, as S-Budget or Clever products. Still, it will always have a stamp as shown in the picture below. Although the products do not bear the halal stamp on the package, Huber’s Halal certification can be found on their official website.
Another convenient option is Halal Argeta Aufstrich, a ready-to-eat spread popular for sandwiches and quick snacks, also widely sold in stores like Spar, Billa, and Hofer, It is clearly labeled with the halal logo, making it easy to identify. But be careful, if it is not labeled with a Halal stamp, it will not be Halal as they wrote on their website.
There are several international markets that offer a wide variety of global products — from meats, spices, grains, and legumes to fresh fruits, vegetables, and even kitchenware — catering to diverse culinary traditions and tastes

Always check online or at the store entrance for exact hours — they may vary slightly by location or during holidays.
Monday to Friday: 7:15 AM – 19:00 to 20:00
Saturday: 7:15 AM – 18:00 PM
Sunday: Closed, except for a few (e.g., Spar at Linz Hauptbahnhof, gas stations), which stay open -also from Mon-Sat after normal opening hours- until the late hours, prices in gas stations might be higher overall. Some eastern markets are also open on Sunday mornings or early afternoons, depending on the owner.
Don’t forget to bring your grocery bag, otherwise you will pay extra for having a bag in the supermarket!
Most major supermarkets have their own apps(Spar, JÖ app, etc…) that offer loyalty cards and discounts.
Look for weekly deals and discounts.
Keep an eye on expiry dates, especially for products under offers.
Fresh products like bread, meat, and fruits are often discounted shortly before closing time.
Prices vary between stores, for example, Hofer is often cheaper for basics like milk, while Turkish shops may offer better deals on lentils and spices.
You can also buy some basic needs or snacks from gas stations after closing times.
Usually, all major supermarkets have their own brand products, which are cheaper and similar price-wise.
Note: Not a really popular option since when ordering your groceries online, prices might be more expensive, and not all options are available.
