Address Registration (Anmeldung)

A must-do within your first days. It’s legally required and essential for opening a bank account, setting up insurance, purchasing a transportation ticket, amongst other essentials.

Meldezettel

One of the very first steps after arriving in Austria is to register your address with the local authorities. This process, called Meldezettel Anmeldung, is a legal requirement within 3 days of moving in and serves as the foundation for almost everything else in your student life. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, activate health insurance, complete university enrollment, or extend your visa.

What is it?

Official address registration with local authorities. Deadline: Must be done within 3 days of moving in.
Required for opening a bank account, insurance, university registration, and visa extensions.

Where to Register in Linz:

Magistrat in the city hall (Neues Rathaus)
City Library (near the university)
Wissensturm Library (near the main train station)

Required Documents:

Valid passport or ID
Rental contract or accommodation confirmation
Meldezettel form (available at the office or online)
Dormitory stamp or landlord's signature
Register with a foreign ID if possible—it costs €21 instead of €42 with a passport.
- Note: The fee is for first-time document processing, not the registration(Anmeldung).

Tip: Ask your landlord to sign the registration form beforehand!

Your post box

After you are registered by the municipality, so know your address is known by different parties and governmental entities, so your POST BOX is now becoming your official channel to contact you by any official agency, and you must check it frequently (once a day, ideally)

Aktivpass

As a student in Linz, you can apply for the Aktivpass (Active Pass) issued by the City of Linz, which gives you access to a wide range of discounts and benefits. With the Aktivpass, you can enjoy reduced prices for cultural events, sports facilities, public swimming pools, museums, concerts, and the monthly public transport ticket within the city.

To be eligible, you must be officially registered as living in Linz and meet certain income requirements, most full-time students qualify. The pass is valid for one year and can be renewed as long as you still meet the conditions.

How to Apply:

Apply in person at the Linz City Hall (Neues Rathaus) or the designated Aktivpass office.
Bring your student ID, proof of residence (Meldezettel), a valid photo ID (passport or ID card), and proof of income (or confirmation of student status).
You’ll receive the card immediately upon approval.
